Dorchester celebrates growing business scene

Last Monday, Dorchester held an open house and had ribbon cutting ceremonies to celebrate the two businesses that have opened in town over the past year. Check out the May 29 issue of the Crete News to hear from the new local business owners and get a look into the firearms business that is set to come to town soon.

The Friend electric car team set new track records at three of the four races we attended during the 2024 season. All track records are currently held by Friend.
Friend’s 13 car also took home the Highest Season Mileage Award which is given to the car which completed the most race miles in the season. Read more about the team and its accomplishments in this week's Friend Sentinel.

Doane University to host youth basketball camps

Doane University is hosting youth basketball camps June 10 and 11 at the Haddix center. Boys and girls camps are available for children grades 1 - 4 and 5 - 8. The cost is $80, which includes a t-shirt. The camp is lead by Ryan Baumgartner and the head coach of Doane University's women's team. Registration forms are available at the Cardinal Welcome Center in Crete.

Pause to remember on Memorial Day - MONDAY, MAY 27

Crete
Riverside Cemetery at 11 a.m. The service is combined with the American Legion and VFW. Cody Vance will be the speaker. A covered dish dinner will follow at the VFW Club.
DeWitt
Oak Grove Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. The Tri County band will play. A luncheon will be held after the service at the Community Center, provided by the Cemetery Association.
Dorchester
Dorchester Cemetery at 10 a.m. The Dorchester High School band will play. The Junior Auxiliary will take part in the services. Lunch will be served at the American Legion after the Pleasant Hill program. Boys State representative Owen Vyhnalek will be the speaker.
Exeter
Exeter Cemetery at 10 a.m. The program will include a color guard salute.
Friend
Saline County Attorney David Solheim will be the speaker at the three Memorial Day services in Friend. The American Legion will be open following the programs.
German Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.
Catholic Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Andrew Cemetery at 11 a.m.
Milligan
A program will be held at 1:45 p.m. in the park. Beginning at 2 p.m. there will be a service in the auditorium.
Western
Speaker Jon Brueggermann will give a presentation at the Plainview Cemetery at 10 a.m.
Wilber
Legion Park by the Memorial at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the Wilber Care Center.
American Legion Commander Lisa Shore will speak at both Wilber ceremonies.

EMF golf finishes season at state

The Exeter-Milligan-Friend golf team competed in the Class C state tournament May 22 and finished out of trophy contention with a team total of 367. Carter Milton shot an 87, Draven Payne 92, Aidan Vavra 93, Andrew Vavra 95 and Zach Spohn 107. Read more about the tournament and see more pictures in next week's Friend Sentinel.

Vertin earns sixth at state

Reece Vertin of Crete finished the Class B state golf tournament with a two-day total of 152 and a sixth-place medal. Teammate Wyatt Clarke shot a 176 over the two days at Scottsbluff.

DU track and field opens national meet

Zach Turner and Thomas Oliver turned in the top times in their preliminary events yesterday to advance in the NAIA national track and field championships. Turner's time of 51.58 seconds led the 400-meter hurdles, and Oliver's time of 9:04.9 led the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Placing in events yesterday for the Tigers were Kaylee Pribyl, eighth in the pole vault at 12-1.75, and Macy Fuller, sixth in the hammer throw at 184-0.
