The Dorchester girls’ basketball team hadn’t played since Dec. 19, but the Longhorns didn’t seem to mind as DHS dominated Lewiston 56-15 on Jan. 3.
Dorchester got out to a blazing hot start in the first half, taking a 39-2 lead into halftime and saw a team of mostly bench players get playing time in the second half to cruise to the big win. Dorchester led 52-9 at the end of three quarters and continued to dominate the rest of the game.
“We had a really good game,” Coach Brandon Bruha said. “We shot well from the field and our defense was great. We created a lot of turnovers with our press which led to some easy baskets. Our girls are starting to get in a rhythm and playing consistent basketball.”
Atley Zoubek and Gabby Theis each scored 12 points and Baylor Behrens scored 11.
Dorchester also hosted Heartland Lutheran on Jan. 6 and beat the Red Hornets in a low scoring 37-18 game.
“We struggled finishing shots last night,” Bruha said. “We did a good job, I thought, of creating opportunities for ourselves but just couldn’t seem to hit anything on a consistent basis.”
A majority of the Longhorns’ points came in the first half, scoring seven in the first quarter and 15 in the second quarter to take a 22-7 lead into halftime.
“Our defense was there once again,” Bruha said. “We did a good job of forcing them to shoot contested shots from the outside in which they struggled to hit.”
Dorchester was scheduled to play at Cedar Bluffs on Jan. 4, but the game was postponed until Jan. 13 because of inclement weather.
Dorchester was scheduled to host Sterling on Thursday, Jan. 9, starting at 6 p.m.
