Immediately after Jackie's birth, her father returned to World War II in Europe. When her father returned from the army, the family moved to Oregon until just before the birth of her brother, Kenneth, in 1947 when they moved to Milligan. Jackie worked as a long-distance phone operator for Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph and as a key punch operator for Classified List. In 1968, the family moved to a farm southeast of Friend. Jackie worked at Thompson's Locker and then as a nurse's aide at the new Friend Manor. She graduated from SECC in Lincoln in 1975 as an LPN and was charge nurse at the Warren Memorial Annex.

In 1977, the family moved to Osage Beach, Missouri, where they had a boat sales and service business. Jackie worked at the Lake of the Ozarks General Hospital. They moved back to Friend when John became afflicted with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1981. Jackie worked at the Friend Manor throughout the 1980s and was also an EMT with the Friend Ambulance. She attended College of Saint Mary's of Omaha during that time and graduated in 1990 as an RN, worked at LRC Forensic Unit for three years and Exeter Care Center and Friend Manor for several years. She graduated from Doane College in 1998 with a Bachelor's in Allied Health and retired from nursing in 2009.
