John E. “Jack” Burns, age 94, of York, died Tuesday, March 1, 2022, in York. He was born May 5, 1927, to John and Helen (Kirwin) Burns in Friend. On Feb. 23, 1954, he was united in marriage to Leona Becker in Exeter.

John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in York, Knights of Columbus and the York Rural Fire Board. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was a life-time farmer in Saline and York counties, and he also enjoyed playing cards, traveling, working with livestock, helping with the fish fry and was always ready to help his neighbors.  

He is survived by his son, Kevin Burns of York; daughter, Mary (Dave) Doremus of Benedict; son, Dan (Dawn) Burns of Yankton, South Dakota; grandchildren, Christine (Tom) Jarosz of Stromsburg, Nathan (Amy) Doremus of Benedict, Audrey (Matt) Walford of York, Charles (Anne) Burns of Madison Heights, Michigan, Sara Burns of York, Jessica (Jacob) Callaghan of Cyrus, Minnesota, and Rachel Burns of Vermillion, South Dakota. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Catherine Burns of York; and special friend, Darleene Becker of Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Maurice; sister, Mary Virginia; and two infant grandsons.  

A Mass of Christian Burial was March 5 at St Joseph Catholic Church in York with military graveside services at the church cemetery east of York. Memorial contributions are suggested to St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.metzmortuary.com.
