Dr. Roger P. Massie, 78, passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, in his home, surrounded by his family and beloved dog, Hercules.

Roger was born Sept. 26, 1943, to Edward and Helen (Palmer) Massie in Blue Springs. He graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School, received his bachelor’s from the University of Nebraska, his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and his residency at Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California.

Roger provided medical care to Plainview, Orchard, Yankton, the Santee Sioux Nation, Omaha and Friend during his 47-year career as a board-certified family physician. He loved providing medical care in rural towns, as he could serve the entire family from birth until death. He was able to leave his legacy with future physicians when he was a faculty member at Clarkson Family Medicine Residency Program. He retired in 2018. Being a physician wasn’t just a job – it was his way of life and gave him joy. When he wasn’t working, one could find him golfing, playing cribbage, hunting, fishing, having a drink and a smoke, or boating at his cabin in Lazy River Acres near Verdel, Nebraska. He loved following his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their many endeavors.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Joanne Leiding; sister Joyce Hansen; aunts, Hazel and Rachel Palmer; brothers-in-law, Roger Rohrig and Chris Vinderslev; and beloved pets, Maizie and Maggie.

Roger is survived by his wife, Lori; dog, Hercules; children, Jeff (Monica) Massie, Lisa (Perry) VanOstrand, John (Christy) Massie and Ann (Aaron) Collingham; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; father-in-law, Gordon Leiding; brother, Ron (Madeline) Massie, sister, Jan Vanderslev; brother-in-law, Dale Hansen; and sisters-in-law, Janet (John) McCain, Jody (Dennis) Graskowiak; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

An open house will be Sept. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Roper & Sons Midtown Chapel in Lincoln. A private casting ceremony will take place in the future.
