Alan Louis Miller was born to John Oliver and Melba Rose Laufmann Miller on Feb. 2, 1946, in Friend, and passed away June 7, 2022, at Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 76. He was one of three children in the family.

Alan graduated from Exeter High School in 1964. He has kept in touch with his classmates all through his lifetime. He served his country by being in the army. He reached the rank of sergeant and served in the 70th Armored Division in Europe. He spent more than 40 years working for IBM. He took the acronym seriously (I’ve Been Moved) spending time in Omaha, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Annandale, Virginia, and Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was married to Cecilia Motley, of Washington, on Nov. 18, 1989, and raised two wonderful sons, Adam and Shane. Alan will be remembered as the jury rigger extraordinaire and his love of Ace Hardware. He spent any years in the Washington, D.C., area and worshipped the Washington Nationals and the Washington Redskins. Above all, he loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers, as evidenced by the trinkets and memorabilia around his office and garage. If he had a free afternoon, he would typically be on the golf course or fishing in the local pond – those were his passions. He loved his family, including his animal families. There was not a day that he wasn’t outside in his garden or working on his lawn.

Al was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Oliver and Melba Rose (Laufmann), and his sister, Sharon Harre. He is survived by his wife, Cecilia Miller, of Leland, North Carolina; and sons, Adam Miller and Jessie of Frederick, Maryland, and Shane Miller of Miami, Florida; brother and sister-in-law, John and Janice Miller of Exeter; brothers in-law and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Janette Motley of Niwot, Colorado, Ron and Kate Motley of Fairfax, Virginia, Michael and Christie Motley of Alexandria, Virginia, Karen and Dave Nash of Manassas, Virginia, Keven and Terri Motley of Leland, North Carolina; and many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as many special friends.
